A Comparative Analysis of Third-Party Logistics (3PL) and Fourth-Party Logistics (4PL) Services: A Case Study of Total Nigeria in Jigawa State

Background of the Study
Third-party logistics (3PL) and fourth-party logistics (4PL) services are integral to modern supply chain management. 3PL focuses on providing logistics services such as transportation and warehousing, while 4PL offers a higher level of supply chain integration, including strategic oversight and end-to-end solutions (Adekunle & Afolabi, 2024).

Total Nigeria, a leading player in the oil and gas industry, relies on logistics services for the efficient delivery of products across the country. In Jigawa State, where logistical challenges such as poor road infrastructure and limited warehousing facilities exist, the effectiveness of 3PL versus 4PL services is a critical consideration for operational success (Usman & Musa, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Logistics inefficiencies can lead to increased costs and delays in product delivery, affecting customer satisfaction and competitiveness. Total Nigeria in Jigawa State must determine whether to rely on 3PL services for their operational capabilities or 4PL services for their strategic integration benefits. This study explores the comparative impact of these logistics services on supply chain performance (Garba & Hassan, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the operational efficiency of 3PL services for Total Nigeria.
  2. To assess the strategic integration benefits of 4PL services.
  3. To recommend the optimal logistics service model for Total Nigeria in Jigawa State.

Research Questions

  1. How do 3PL services contribute to operational efficiency for Total Nigeria?
  2. What are the strategic benefits of 4PL services for Total Nigeria?
  3. Which logistics service model is most effective for Total Nigeria in Jigawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: 3PL services do not significantly improve operational efficiency for Total Nigeria.
  2. H0: 4PL services do not significantly enhance strategic supply chain integration.
  3. H0: There is no significant difference in supply chain performance between 3PL and 4PL services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study examines the impact of 3PL and 4PL services on Total Nigeria’s logistics operations in Jigawa State, focusing on cost efficiency, operational performance, and strategic integration. Limitations include limited access to proprietary logistics data and regional variability in findings.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Third-Party Logistics (3PL): External service providers handling specific logistics operations.
  2. Fourth-Party Logistics (4PL): Comprehensive supply chain solutions integrating multiple service providers.
  3. Supply Chain Integration: The alignment and coordination of supply chain activities to achieve seamless operations.
